Grades 6 to 9
Algebra Tiles
Build an expression from x squared, x and 1 tiles. Drag them into groups, turn a rod to make a rectangle, flip a tile to make it negative, and read the expression the tiles show.
The tiles show: 0
Ways to use it in class
- Model an expression. Build 2x² − x + 3 and read it back from the tiles.
- Combine like terms. Drag tiles of one kind together, and cancel a positive with a negative to make zero.
- Multiply binomials. Lay tiles along two sides and fill the rectangle: (x + 2)(x + 1) gives x² + 3x + 2.
- Factor a trinomial. Build x² + 5x + 6 and arrange the tiles into a rectangle. Its sides are the factors.
Questions teachers ask
- What are algebra tiles?
- Tiles that stand for the parts of an expression. A small square is 1, a rod is x, and a large square is x squared. Each comes in a positive and a negative color, so a student can build and move terms they can see.
- How do the tiles show a negative?
- Negative tiles are red. Select a tile and press Flip sign to switch it between positive and negative. A positive tile and a negative one of the same kind cancel to make zero, which is how the tiles show why x + (−x) = 0.
- How do I use them to add and combine like terms?
- Build each expression, drag the tiles together and group tiles of the same kind. The line under the board adds up the tiles for you, so you can check that 2x + 3 and x − 1 combine to 3x + 2.
- Can I factor or multiply with them?
- Yes. To multiply (x + 2)(x + 1), put an x and 2 along one side and an x and 1 along the other, then fill the rectangle with tiles: one x squared, three x tiles and two 1 tiles. Reading the tiles gives x² + 3x + 2.
