Grades K to 3
Analog Clock
A big clock face with hands you can drag. The time is written in digits and in words, and a practice mode hides the answer so children can say the time first.
Drag the long hand for minutes or the short hand for hours. Grab near the middle for the hour hand.
Ways to use it in class
- Say the time. Press New time with the answer hidden, let students call it out, then press Show answer.
- Set the time. Say "quarter past four" and have a student drag the hands to show it.
- Hour and minute hands. Move the minute hand all the way around and watch the hour hand move one hour.
- Past and to. Compare 4:10 and 4:50 to see why one is "ten past four" and the other "ten to five".
Questions teachers ask
- How do I set the time on the clock?
- Drag the long minute hand or the short hour hand around the face, or type the hour and minute in the boxes. The hour hand moves as the minutes pass, as on a real clock.
- How do children learn to tell time?
- Start with the hour, then half past, then quarter past and quarter to, then to the nearest five minutes and finally to the minute. Say each time out loud with the hands showing it. Press New time with the answer hidden, let students say it, then reveal it.
- How do I show quarter past and half past?
- Quarter past is 15 minutes after the hour: the minute hand points at the 3. Half past is 30 minutes: it points at the 6. Quarter to is 45 minutes: it points at the 9. The words under the clock write each one out.
- Can I print a blank clock?
- Yes. Turn off Show the time and the numbers you do not want, set the hands, and press Print. For practice sheets, press New time a few times and print each clock.
